What’s Coming For The Star Wars Franchise In 2024?

Disney packed 2023 with Star Wars content, making it an exciting time to be a Star Wars fan. The studio kicked off the year with Star Wars: The Bad Batch season two, The Mandalorian season three, Visions volume two, Young Jedi Adventures, and Ahsoka. The success of these shows and Lucasfilm’s games has opened the door for so much in the world of Star Wars. 2023 was a busy year for Star Wars, potentially giving fans whiplash from the amount of content that flooded Disney+.

The release schedule for 2024 will see a slowdown in content, but the quality is at an all-time high. Unfortunately, there won’t be any new Star Wars movies in 2024, but some, like Daisy Ridley’s New Jedi Order film, will begin production. That means Disney+ subscribers will receive all the new content throughout the year. The Hollywood strikes slowed down production a little, making exact dates uncertain for the time being, but the studio is committed to releasing each of the following projects in 2024.

Skeleton Crew

Creator

Christopher Ford and Jon Watts

Cast

Jude Law, Kerry Condon, Ryan Kiera Armstrong

Total Episodes

8

Jude Law enters the galaxy far, far away with this coming-of-age story as an unnamed Force-user. The show will follow a group of kids who make a strange discovery on their home planet, leading them to get lost in a strange galaxy. This could be some creative way to refer to the galaxy they already exist in, but fans have a couple of theories about the synopsis. One theory suggests that the kids find themselves in the same galaxy where Peridea resides, while another theory proposes the children are from a different galaxy and end up in the main Star Wars one.

This is an especially exciting project for fans because it’s the first one to feature completely new characters not introduced in a previous movie or series. Rumors suggest Skeleton Crew will tie in to Dave Filoni’s The Mandalorian movie, but since he’s not at the helm, it’s unlikely.

The Acolyte

Star Wars High Republic The Acolyte

Creator

Leslye Headland

Cast

Dafne Keen, Amanda Stenberg, Jodie Turner-Smith

Total Episodes

8

As another first for upcoming Star Wars projects, The Acolyte will be the first to extend beyond the timeframe of the Skywalker Saga, and will be the live-action debut for a new Star Wars era. The Acolyte takes place during the High Republic, 100 years prior to the events of Star Wars: The Phantom Menace. Besides a character in Star Wars: Jedi Survivor, fans have only seen this period of the galaxy far, far away in novel form.

Lucasfilm has described The Acolyte as a mystery-thriller that will see the fall of the High Republic through the eyes of the Sith. Star Wars Celebration 2023 unveiled an action-packed trailer, but general audiences haven’t seen it yet, increasing anticipation. Its exact premiere date is unknown, but it’s on track for a 2024 release. Any readers of the High Republic novels should expect to see some familiar faces despite the showrunner not releasing any character names.

Andor Season 2

Cassian_looking_back_in_Andor

Creator

Tony Gilroy

Cast

Diego Luna, Kyle Soller, Stellan Skarsgard

Total Episodes

12

2024 ushers in Andor’s second and final season, which will lead up to the events of Rogue One: A Star Wars Story. The season’s 12 episodes will span four years of Cassian Andor’s life as he works with the fledgling Rebel Alliance. Star Wars Celebration 2023 gave fans a sneak peek of the upcoming season, but like The Acolyte, the general public has not seen what’s in store for Cassian in his final season.

The first season saw Cassian reluctantly join the rebels, where he worked with Luthen Rael to infiltrate an Imperial garrison. The last time audiences saw the titular character, he escaped from prison, joined the rebellious acts of his home planet, and solidified his place with the Rebel Alliance. The second season will show audiences what Cassian did with the rebels before meeting his fate on the beaches of Scarif, where he helped steal the Death Star blueprints.

The Bad Batch Final Season

Creators

Jennifer Corbett and Dave Filoni

Cast

Ming-Na Wen, Dee Bradley Baker, Michelle Ang

Total Episodes

16

Andor isn’t the only Star Wars series receiving its finale. Star Wars Celebration 2023 announced that the third season of The Bad Batch will be the show’s last. It’s a bittersweet feeling, as the show might be ending, but its final season will tie into The Mandalorian and the sequel trilogy in some capacity. The Bad Batch season three will likely have 16 episodes, following the trend from its first two seasons, and fan-favorite characters, such as Fennec Shand, will return.

The second season ended with a cataclysmic finale, where a betrayal leads to Omega’s kidnapping and the reveal of a new clone while a beloved character sacrifices their life for the good of the mission. Season three promises to be explosive after the events in season two. With Filoni at the helm and in his new position as Chief Creative Officer, it’s sure to come to a satisfying conclusion.

Outlaws

Star Wars Outlaws Kay Running

Creator

Julian Gerighty

Cast

Dee Bradley Baker, JayR Tinaco, Humberly Gonzalez

Platforms

Xbox, Playstation, and PC

Star Wars has one video game in the pipeline for a 2024 release, and it promises to give fans a new experience unlike previous games from the franchise. Unlike Star Wars: Jedi Survivor, Fallen Order, or even Knights of the Old Republic, Star Wars: Outlaws puts the player in the shoes of a non-Force-using character who is on the wrong side of the law.

Outlaws is the first open-world Star Wars game, and is set between The Empire Strikes Back and The Return of the Jedi. It will allow players to join or fight against the galaxy’s crime syndicates while avoiding capture from the Galactic Empire. The game will be available on Xbox, Playstation, and PC.
