Overwatch 2 Mauga Item References The Rock

Overwatch 2 players point out that a cosmetic item references successful actor and professional wrestler Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson.

Highlights

  • Overwatch 2 released Season 8, which included a new tank character named Mauga and a unique spray referencing Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson’s iconic eyebrow raise.
  • The subtle nod to The Rock in Mauga’s spray suggests that more cosmetics based on The Rock may be added in future updates to Overwatch 2.

An Overwatch 2 spray for Mauga references actor Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and his eyebrow. The Rock has been raising his iconic eyebrow since the 1990s, and now Overwatch 2 has commemorated it with this unique nod to him.

Overwatch 2 Season 8 was released on December 5 and with it came several adjustments to the game. Season 8 introduced a PvE game mode called The Battle of the Beasts, Hard Light Weapon Skins, and more. Like past seasons, the hero shooter also gained a new character in Season 8 with the addition of Mauga. Mauga is a new tank character that was revealed at BlizzCon 2023, and he has two miniguns that dish out massive damage. Mauga features his own lineup of cosmetics, including his version of The Rock’s raised eyebrow.

Overwatch 2 Players on PS5 Reportedly Struggling With Serious Frame Drops

Many Overwatch 2 players on PS5 experience serious frame rate drops causing gameplay problems and abnormal graphics since a new update.

Reddit user cheesebxwl recently shared an image splicing together Overwatch 2‘s Mauga and The Rock. On the left, The Rock has one eyebrow lifted while the other one is lowered. Mirroring The Rock’s face, Mauga strikes the same pose in a spray that can be acquired for 100 Overwatch 2 Credits. The comparison from this Reddit user shows how accurate the spray is to The Rock, but it’s missing the shading that highlights the half of his face with the lifted eyebrow. The Rock often turns his head when striking this pose, as it emphasizes the intensity of the open eye while hiding the one that’s mostly closed.

Similar to The Rock, Mauga has an impressive set of tattoos and has Samoan heritage. The Overwatch 2 hero makes many references to Samoan culture much like The Rock did in his professional wrestling career and some films. One emote also has Mauga doing a Pec Dance similar to The Rock in Journey 2: The Mysterious Island, and another one features Mauga in a pose that would look familiar in professional wrestling. While the Mauga Back Flex isn’t something The Rock is known to do, WWE wrestlers like Lex Luger and Raquel Rodriguez are known for this pose.

Though Mauga’s spray is a subtle nod to The Rock, it’s unmistakable that he’s making the same facial expression. The homage may draw inspiration from both The Rock and Mauga frequently referencing their Samoan heritage. Because Blizzard continues to update Overwatch 2, Mauga may receive even more cosmetics based on The Rock.
