What Assassin’s Creed Raid’s Codename Could Suggest About the Title

Highlights

  • Rumors suggest that there are three Assassin’s Creed games in pre-development, codenamed Nebula, Echoes, and Raid.
  • Project Raid is rumored to be a multiplayer-exclusive game, potentially inspired by the Raid side activities in Valhalla.

Back in September 2022, Ubisoft laid out its plan for the future of the Assassin’s Creed franchise. The Assassin’s Creed showcase officially unveiled four games currently in development for the now classic series. Along with the recently released Assassin’s Creed Mirage, these planned games are Assassin’s Creed Jade (mobile-exclusive/China setting), Assassin’s Creed Red (Japan setting), and Assassin’s Creed Hexe (European witch trial setting). One month after this showcase, Ubisoft announced the multiplayer Project Invictus, which is labeled as a multiplayer AC experience, before also announcing Assassin’s Creed Nexus (VR).

According to Insider Gaming, there are rumored to be an additional three Assassin’s Creed games currently in the concept or prototype stage/ pre-development. The codenames for these projects are Nebula, Echoes, and Raid. If the Assassin’s Creed franchise’s prototype naming history is any indication, then these codenames should hint at what they are going to be. Though things can change drastically from a pitch to a final product, rumors surrounding these games can at least present an idea of what fans can see down the road. So far, all rumors suggest that Project Raid is going to be another multiplayer-exclusive Assassin’s Creed game.

Assassin's Creed Unity

Project Raid was allegedly pitched by Ubisoft Chengdu, a division of the company based in Chengdu, China. Project Raid is said to be a free-to-play 4-player cooperative title with a PvE focus. Rumors also suggest that the playable characters will be Assassins from across the franchise. It is not currently known if Raid will be a part of Assassin’s Creed Infinity, the future of the series in the form of a single hub.

It is currently announced that the multiplayer Project Invictus is going to be a part of Infinity, which could suggest that Raid will follow suit. In addition to Invictus and Raid, Project Echoes is said to be a third multiplayer Assassin’s Creed game. Rumored to be in development at Ubisoft Annecy, co-developer of The Division 2 and the studio behind the multiplayer sections of AC and Splinter Cell games, Invictus is said to make use of Ubisoft Scalar Technology. Though there are several multiplayer AC games on the table, Raid‘s codename may suggest what sets it apart.

Assassin’s Creed Raid’s Codename Likely Leans into Multiplayer Roots

Assassin’s Creed Raid could potentially be a game dedicated to or inspired by the Raid side activities in Valhalla. Perhaps allowing players to team up with their friends to raid non-player enemy strongholds or encampments in various settings throughout the Assassin’s Creed franchise. This could be an opportunity to provide unlockable gear and rewards that players can equip for their character or perhaps use to customize a home camp. As the game is said to be free-to-play, it is presumed that there will be some sort of in-game purchases made available.

Assassin’s Creed games of the past have shown that multiplayer can work well in the franchise. Assassin’s Creed 3‘s matchmaking and Assassin’s Creed Unity‘s multiplayer are great examples of fun ideas that could have been made even better with updates and polish. Raid offers an exciting opportunity for the franchise to provide an easily accessible, free-to-play multiplayer experience that anyone can play. Whether it is inspired by Valhalla‘s Raids or some new PvE concept altogether, players should certainly stay tuned for more information in the future.
