Man arrested after three failed carjacking attempts in Ajax

A Toronto man faces a slew of charges following a trio of alleged carjackings in Ajax over the weekend that went awry.

Police responded to call about a stolen vehicle at a parking lot in the Bayly St. W. and Kitney Dr. area of the city.

The alleged victim said he was returning to his vehicle from a local business when he was approached by a man who gestured that he was armed and told to exit the car.

The suspect fled in the victim’s vehicle before he crashed into a tree a short distance away, Durham Regional Police said in a news release.

The alleged carjacker attempted to steal the vehicle of another driver who stopped to offer assistance after witnessing the collision but was unsuccessful.

He fled the scene on foot but was arrested and detained nearby after a third carjacking attempt failed.

The suspect was taking to local hospital with minor injuries.

Ricardo Newell, 20, from Toronto faces 17 charges including robbery, disguise with intent, possession and use of a firearm during commission of an offence and fail to comply with release order.

He is being held for a bail hearing.
