Arrowhead CEO Johan Pilestedt’s fitting reply to a console fanboy reminded gamers that teamwork is more important than petty rivalry. With games like Hi-Fi Rush heading to PlayStation consoles, the industry is slowly moving away from the concept of exclusives. PlayStation is also beginning to consider day-one PC releases and Helldivers 2’s success is proof that breaking down barriers is good for business.

Instances like these haven’t always gone well with some of the more expressive parts of the gaming community. One such account shared an image on X (formerly Twitter) with the caption ‘Sorry Xbots, but everyone knows it’s the TRUTH.’ The image was a ‘Helldivers 2 > Halo’ one, an idea that makes little sense as they don’t even belong to the same genre. It didn’t take long for Arrowhead’s CEO to respond.

‘Why compare?’ noted Pilestedt in his reply on X (formerly Twitter). ‘Just let gamers love and enjoy both, either or neither. We need more compassion and union in the world, and less rivalry.’ While his response stopped a needless comparison, it also speaks to the converging ideas of all major gaming platforms.

A lot has changed in gaming. After Microsoft acquired Activision-Blizzard, they promised to bring Call of Duty to Nintendo devices. Several of their titles are heading to PlayStation consoles as well. The old tactic of locking players into walled gardens with paid services is slowly being phased out. A collaborative future is no longer a pipe dream.

With life outside video games being hard enough, Johan Pilestedt is right in saying that we need more compassion in the world. And with less rivalry, that could happen. Even Helldivers 2 players have been asking Arrowhead Game Studios for an Xbox release. With years of fighting alien species in titles like Halo and Gears of War, Xbox fans could help with whittling down the endless Terminid and Automaton threats in Helldivers 2. While it’s just a dream, there’s no denying that it sounds good for Sony and Arrowhead as well.
