Dreams, By Media Molecule, Supposedly Almost Came To PC And PS5

Dreams, the game creation system from Media Molecule, reportedly had finished ports for both PS5 and PC before being canceled. Media Molecule is famous for making the first two Little Big Planet Games. This information comes from a source close to the developer, streamer Lance McDonald, who shared it during his recent Twitch stream.

According to McDonald’s source, who was involved in testing the PC port, both versions were ready to ship but ultimately shelved due to layoffs at Media Molecule. This aligns with the studio’s announcement in April 2023 to discontinue live support for Dreams, shifting focus to “an exciting new project.” The alleged cancellation of the ports likely happened around the same time. Dreams launched for PlayStation 4 in February 2020, allowing players to create and share games, interactive experiences, and even art within the Dreams universe. It offered various built-in titles developed by Media Molecule itself, featuring diverse genres and mechanics. Players primarily navigate and interact with the Dreams world through an “imp,” acting as a cursor to manipulate objects and craft new creations.

While the source seems credible, it’s important to remember that Sony and Media Molecule haven’t officially confirmed this information. So, make sure to treat it with a grain of salt until it is officially confirmed.

I’ve played Dreams and am a huge fan of Little Big Planet, and I can definitely see how it could have worked on PC. While the game advertises the PlayStation Wand as the preferred controller used, it’d be much better to use a mouse and keyboard. It’s essentially a new engine that runs on your PlayStation 4. This seems like a financial oversight because you can only show your creations to other Dreams users.

Hopefully, we’ll see it on PC soon, and the Dreams Engine could end up being a real game development engine.
