An unconscious man was lying in his driveway, a shattered rear windshield of a car and a menacing rock about a metre away.

Just like that, a quiet and pleasant Christmas week on Boustead Ave. turned deadly.

“I saw paramedics working on my neighbour and putting him on a stretcher,” said a resident of the street. “I thought at first he had a heart attack.”

But then the rock was noticed. And damage to a car.

The word came down that there had been an interaction with a man on a bike.

The mystery was in full swing.

Toronto Police were not tipping their hand either. Later, the man died in hospital and post-mortem work began to determine the cause of death.

While people on the street were expecting an update from police, as of Wednesday afternoon this is still being considered a suspicious death.

Neighbour Bob Mellings said he couldn’t believe the man is gone.

“He was such a nice person,” he said. “It’s so tragic.”

He also called what happened “scary.”

So far, it’s all unexplained.

But the police are busy doing their work. One neighbour handed over surveillance video evidence and businesses nearby said police have been canvassing the area looking for video.

They are looking for a white male in his 40s, about 5-foot-9, with brown hair, and a black mountain bike.

Insp. Peter Wehby told the media of an interaction between the deceased man and this man. Other neighbours talked of perhaps an original exchange between the two.

The deceased man is said to work in the trades and was always friendly. His family inside the house declined to comment.

For now, it’s unclear exactly what happened or how he died.

But an answer is expected soon.

“We believe that the male had an interaction with a second male and at that time there was some sort of an altercation that happened,” Wehby told reporters.

“Investigations are dynamic, and information can change as witnesses are interviewed and video surveillance is reviewed.”
