Evil Empire is giving some fans a chance to play The Rogue Prince of Persia early. The studio’s offer arrives in the form of a newly announced The Rogue Prince of Persia closed alpha test.

The existence of the upcoming Prince of Persia spin-off was originally leaked in early April. True to that initial report, the Evil Empire-developed game ended up being announced on April 10 with a May 14 release date. The French studio is planning to debut The Rogue Prince of Persia as a Steam Early Access title. The roguelite’s console versions are yet to be officially confirmed.

The Rogue Prince of Persia Closed Alpha Test Is Starting Soon

In the meantime, Evil Empire has announced a closed alpha test that fans can sign up for via the game’s official website. The studio did not elaborate on when exactly the test is planned to kick off, but with The Rogue Prince of Persia‘s release date being just a month away, the wait for the alpha to commence ostensibly won’t be too long. Based on how the studio’s previous game, Dead Cells, handled pre-release testing, it’s likely that the upcoming alpha will roll out to users in stages, with the developer gradually increasing the number of testers until it’s satisfied with the scope of the initiative.

Despite the current lack of social media reports suggesting otherwise, it’s possible that alpha invites have already been sent out to some fans. Namely, one of the prerequisites for participating in the test is to agree to an NDA preventing one from discussing the game ahead of its early access debut, so testers would be breaking that agreement by merely confirming their enrollment in the alpha.

That notwithstanding, the roguelite’s core gameplay loop is far from a mystery, not least because Evil Empire and Ubisoft have already offered members of the press a chance to preview The Rogue Prince of Persia ahead of its announcement. It’s hence confirmed that the game will play kind of like another Dead Cells, boasting non-linear levels and story progression.

While Dead Cells was originally made by Motion Twin, the French company later established Evil Empire in order to handle the roguelike’s post-release content. The Rogue Prince of Persia is the studio’s first attempt at making a new game on its own, having reportedly been in development since 2019. Much like Dead Cells, the upcoming Prince of Persia spin-off is planned to be treated to a lot of post-launch content. If the studio’s previous project is any indication, The Rogue Prince of Persia is likely to spend around a year in early access before receiving a full-fledged release.
