The launch of Star Wars: Unlimited last week was followed by an extremely warm welcome from fans, alongside apparent stock issues.
Having only released on March 8th, Fantasy Flight Games’ card game is the latest to hit an extremely competitive scene. Yet, a combination of unique features have helped to set it apart from the rest, and communities both online and in-person are gathering to play the latest Star Wars experience.
According to a recent Facebook post from Fantasy Flight Games, Star Wars: Unlimited is facing “unprecedented success” and has already “far exceeded the sales of any game [they] have ever released as a studio.”
Despite still having stock available. FFG are considering a strategy with their distribution partners to “release the available product in measured waves until Set 2 is released.” This is all in the hopes of keeping community-based events flowing, while also ensuring that Draft and Sealed events are still possible.
This announcement has been met with a fairly varied response. Some commenters on Reddit noted that “scalpers will be thrilled” following the company’s announcement that they are facing issues meeting stock demands. On the other hand though, the reception to FFG accommodating for brick and mortar stores and events over meeting global stock demands has been praised.
The TCG scene has long been in need of a change, especially considering the animosity from MTG players towards Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro. It’s refreshing to see an honest and clear response that puts the players fist.
As of yet, eBay doesn’t look as though it’s flooded with scalped sets, though until we get closer the launch of Star Wars: Unlimited’s second set we won’t know for certain.
