“Today was an important day,” the minister told the House of Commons on Dec. 7, when the federal government announced a cap on oil and gas emissions. “Canada became the first oil and gas producer in the world to put a cap on oil and gas emissions. We are on a trajectory to reducing to net zero by 2050. It is important in our fight against climate change.”

In 2021, he told reporters: “Honour the commitments we made to our children that we’re going to leave them something that is a workable and sustainable world.”

And at the 2020 hearings of the House of Commons environment committee, Wilkinson said: “There is no doubt it is the existential issue of our time. It is something we must take action on in the short term if we want to leave a livable planet for our kids. We are doing the work to ensure we are moving forward in a manner whereby Canada can look our children in the eyes.”
