The most recent Magic: The Gathering ban hammer has struck down on several different cards across MTG’s most popular formats. While the banlist’s most recent bans had focused on the restrictions of Karn, the Great Creator and Geological Appraiser, the recently aired livestream turns its attention to a few other MTG cards deemed slightly too broken to remain in the game’s many metas.

There’s a three week period after a Magic set is released in which the recently printed cards see a short period of evaluation. If, after this period, the design team at Wizards of the Coast deem the card unfit for competitive play, then it’s added to the banlist.

With Murders of Karlov Manor having launched in February, there’s an distinct lack of emphasis on Magic cards within that set. Now that it’s here, Violent Outburst has been banned from Modern, while Ponder has been Unrestricted from Vintage.

Format Banned Cards
Pioneer Unchanged
Standard Unchanged
Modern Violent Outburst
Historic Unchanged
Timeless Unchanged
Pauper Unchanged
Commander Unchanged
Vintage Ponder (Unrestricted)

With Outlaws of Thunder Junction set for a release in April, expect May to feature the next guaranteed MTG Banned and Restricted announcement. That said, there could be more micro-bans set in stone before then. Who knows when they will come. For reference, the most recent ban was in February, which saw Show and Tell banned from Historic.
