God of War Ragnarok’s new free update patch and Valhalla DLC are now live, allowing players to embark on a new quest as Kratos. Last year’s God of War Ragnarok served as an emotional and action-packed climax for Kratos and Atreus’s journey through the Nine Realms of Norse mythology, pitting the father-son duo against the Gods of Asgard in an epic battle to determine the fate of the world. Many fans were left wanting more, and there have been rumors of developer Santa Monica Studio beginning work on another God of War title that could shift the spotlight to Atreus.

Meanwhile, gamers were taken by surprise when a free God of War Ragnarok DLC update was announced during The Game Awards 2023, shortly after Kratos actor Christopher Judge presented the award for Best Performance. Titled God of War Ragnarok Valhalla, this update sees Kratos and Mimir journey to the titular Viking afterlife to battle enemies from the past in a roguelike framework that could set the stage for the rumored God of War half-sequel. Eagle-eyed God of War fans have already noted some interesting details in the Valhalla trailer, including a few nods to Kratos’s original adventures in ancient Greece.

Now players can battle their way through God of War Ragnarok’s new Valhalla DLC, as both it and the connected Patch 05.01 update are live as of this writing. Santa Monica Studio heralded this news with a post on its official Twitter account, revealing the time that both updates were set to launch along with a message telling fans that it is looking forward to seeing their reactions to the roguelike Valhalla campaign. Aside from the new DLC, Patch 05.01 makes a few technical improvements to God of War Ragnarok, such as fixing a bug surrounding Kratos’s new Draupnir Spear.

Santa Monica Studio is also advising players to make sure the base God of War Ragnarok game is fully installed on their PS5s before booting up Valhalla, as they might be stuck on an infinite loading screen otherwise. God of War Ragnarok’s Valhalla DLC will add a new list of trophies for players to unlock, and will likely challenge even the most skilled would-be Spartan with its punishing roguelike combat. In fact, God of War Ragnarok Valhalla reportedly has a brand-new difficulty setting that no member of Santa Monica Studio has beaten so far.
