Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth Director Says Performance Mode Patch is Coming

Highlights

  • Director Naoki Hamaguchi confirms a patch is in development to address Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth’s performance mode graphics issues.
  • Players can choose between two graphical modes, with one focusing on visuals and the other on performance.
  • Fans have criticized the performance mode for lower-quality textures, lighting, and resolution.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth‘s director, Naoki Hamaguchi, has claimed a patch to address the game’s graphics in performance mode is in development and will be released soon. Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth launched on February 29 after much anticipation. The story continues on from the previous game’s ending, following Cloud and his party as they find a way to stop Sephiroth and save the world. One of the things that Rebirth was praised for was its presentation, having incredibly detailed graphics.

Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth has two graphical mode options, one that prioritizes the visuals and another that prioritizes performance. Players can choose between them at any time, with both choices significantly altering the experience. Graphics mode is designed to make the game and its world look its best, with the significant handicap of keeping the game capped at 30 FPS. Performance mode is entirely focused on providing players with the smoothest gameplay experience, running at 60 FPS, but the graphics take a significant hit in this mode. Many fans have voiced their displeasure with the performance mode, citing lower-quality textures, lighting, and resolution. Director Naoki Hamaguchi is aware of the issues fans have had with the graphics, claiming a patch will be coming to Rebirth soon.

Chrono Trigger Director Discusses Remake, Mentions Final Fantasy 7 as Possible Inspiration

Chrono Trigger director Yoshinori Kitase asks fans what would be the best way to remake the classic JRPG for modern gaming audiences.

In an interview with One More Game, the Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth director was asked if the developers were going to address the complaints that were leveled against its performance mode. While Hamaguchi mentioned that he couldn’t reveal the full scope of what the next patch will contain, it will fix the visual quality in performance mode. “We’ve received a lot of feedback on whether the graphics in the performance mode will be improved or not,” said Hamaguchi. “We hear you, and we are currently working on an update patch to improve that aspect. I don’t think the release date would be far away from now.”

What’s Being Fixed in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth?

One of the specific issues that Hamaguchi addressed is with Rebirth‘s lighting and how it looked in performance mode. Hamaguchi agreed with fans on how the facial lighting and shadows made characters in Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth “scary” at a certain angle. When asked which mode Hamaguchi preferred when playing games, he answered that he would choose the graphics-focused mode, as he likes to see the better graphics.

We’ve received a lot of feedback on whether the graphics in the performance mode will be improved or not. We hear you, and we are currently working on an update patch to improve that aspect. I don’t think the release date would be far away from now.

A lot of the performance mode’s issues could be mitigated by playing on lower resolutions and smaller screens, as the inconsistencies won’t be as noticeable. While Rebirth‘s performance mode has issues with the visuals being inconsistent and sometimes even blurry, the graphics mode has also received some pushback, where certain areas of Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth look really choppy while playing. As such, fans have resorted to switching between the two modes when playing the game in order to find a good balance between smooth gameplay and crisp visuals, which might be the best course of action until the patch is released.
