Chaotic cooking indie PlateUp! delays console versions until Early 2024

PlateUp!, an action indie blend of strategic cooking and roguelite progression from developer It’s happening and publisher Yogscast Games, will now launch in Early 2024.

The announcement was confirmed in a new post from the publisher’s official Twitter feed, though they were not specific about the cause for delay. They simply cite the need for more time, “to ensure it’s fully cooked”.

Console ports for the PlayStation and Nintendo Switch were expected to release in October 2023, as seen in last April’s Indie World Showcase. If you’re unfamiliar with PlateUp!, you can review some gameplay in the Switch announcement trailer:

PlateUp! originally launched last year, and is available now on PC, where the game has received widespread praise. Although it was heavily influenced by Overcooked, that isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Overcooked remains an absolute classic. And the PlateUp! devs mustered more than a few twists, which have been enough to justify the similarities for most players.

Highlights would include the procedurally generated locations, as well as the opportunity to design a restaurant from the ground up. The latter has proven especially interesting, allowing players to craft their own strategies and even build some automation.

The roguelite aspects of PlateUp! are not simply decorative or pandering. The devs were cleverly selective about which mechanics to incorporate, so they only improve the central ideas. They also balance well with the co-op cooking formula, which keeps players coming back to Overcooked time and again.

It’s a shame that PlateUp! requires more polishing, but with an “early” release window for 2024, the wait shouldn’t be too long. This implies the issues aren’t too great, and PlateUp! deserves the opportunity for a smooth launch, which fans always support.
