The critically acclaimed Baldur’s Gate 3 is available now for Xbox Series X/S after launching for PC and PS5. Of course, the question now is whether it would ever arrive on Game Pass at some point. In an interview with IGN, game director and Larian Studios founder Swen Vincke said it’s not happening.
“Oh, we always said from the get-go, it wasn’t going to be on Game Pass, it’s not going to be on Game Pass.” Though it’s a sensitive question, he affirmed that the developer is about “making a game that has a beginning, middle, and an end.”
“We made a big game, so I think there’s a fair price to be paid for that, and I think that that is okay. We don’t charge you any micro-transactions on top of it, so you get what you pay for. Upfront, it’s a big meaty game. So I think that should be able to exist as it is. This is what allows us to continue making other games.”
Considering that Larian Studios is fully independent, with Vincke and his wife owning most shares, the focus on revenue from game sales makes sense. While Baldur’s Gate 3 sales haven’t been detailed, it sold over 2.5 million copies in early access for PC. It’s also the second biggest launch on Steam this year, behind Hogwarts Legacy.
As for the future, Vincke teased the studio’s next big RPG and how the success of Baldur’s Gate 3 encourages the studio to ensure it “pushes many boundaries.” What this project could be remains to be seen, but he also confirmed that Divinity: Original Sin 3 would happen at “some point.” Stay tuned for more details and updates as usual.
