Alone in the Dark Delayed to March to Avoid Christmas Crunch

Publisher THQ Nordic and developer Pieces Interactive have announced another Alone in the Dark delay.

The game was originally supposed to launch in October, but was pushed back to January 2024, ostensibly to avoid a clash with major horror release Alan Wake 2.

Now, however, Alone in the Dark has been delayed once again, but this time, it’s got nothing to do with other games. Instead, it’s all about the developers’ wellbeing, or so THQ Nordic says.

You’ll have to wait a little while to put this hellspawn back where it belongs.

In a Steam post announcing the delay, THQ Nordic says that if Pieces Interactive had kept to the intended January release date, the festive season “would have been filled with stress and anything but a jolly time”.

As such, a new release date of March 20th was decided in order to preserve “the wellbeing of the teams” and to avoid crunch over the Christmas period.

The secondary motive behind the delay involves ensuring that Alone in the Dark “not only meets but exceeds the expectations of the community”, according to THQ Nordic.

If you’re unfamiliar with Alone in the Dark, it’s a reimagining of the classic survival horror series, which had arguably fallen by the wayside with the launches of poorly-received installments like 2008’s Alone in the Dark and 2015’s Alone in the Dark: Illumination.

The game will star David Harbour and Jodie Comer as Edward Carnby and Emily Hartwood, who must investigate the sinister Derceto Manor in search of Emily’s uncle Jeremy, who has disappeared.

Alone in the Dark will feature classic survival horror gameplay that focuses on resource management, key-hunting, and dispatching enemies, but unlike the original, it’ll eschew fixed camera angles in favor of Resident Evil 4-style over-the-shoulder shooting.

As of today, Alone in the Dark is set for release on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S on March 20th. A free prologue demo for the game is available right now across all three platforms.
