The new Helldivers 2 defense missions that were added when the Automatons returned have been a breath of fresh air after many players had complained about the original defense missions, which are incredibly frustrating. This new mission sees the Automatons try to break through defenses to reach a target and you have to keep them at bay long enough to complete the mission. These can be difficult to complete, especially at higher difficulties, but one Reddit user has shared a great tip to make them easier, and this can also be used in other missions too.
U/Raspint took to Reddit to share a tactic to make the new defense missions easier saying,
“I don’t care what anyone says, shooting bot dropships absolutely helps. It’s so weird to me that people say this. I’ve downed drop ships and I’ve found that it often takes out several of the troops on it AND it at least slows down the heavier units within. I don’t get why so many people say that it’s only something you should do because it’s fun.”
I had always assumed that dropship couldn’t be destroyed as I have played most of my missions solo in Helldivers 2 and had never tried. But, it was during these new defense missions that I saw another player do it and it did help with us succeeding fairly easily. During the mission I had the Recoilless Rifle, which coincidentally can destroy dropships, and the recently released Quasar Cannon. The Expendeable Anti-Tank is also another option, but with it only having one use it isn’t as good for the defense missions as you have to deal with dozens of dropships.
This is a great tip and should be considered by all players trying out the defense missions as the hordes are dropped from them and, especially when it comes to dealing with the armored enemies, sometimes the exploding ship can kill those enemies which makes things much easier. Dropships can also be destroyed in other missions too, so if you carry any of the stratagems I have mentioned, use it to your advantage to make taking down the Automatons much easier.
