Vanillaware’s RTS and JRPG hybrid Unicorn Overlord has sold over 500,000 copies worldwide according to a new trailer surfaced today.
The trailer is unlisted at the moment but was uncovered by the Japanese blog Sokuho@Hokanko(Alt), and interestingly it’s an accolade trailer destined for the Japanese audience.
This is certainly a rather groundbreaking achievement, as Vanillaware games tend to be rather niche and take a much longer time to reach big numbers, mostly via word of mouth.
That being said, it’s certainly deserved, considering that Unicorn Overlord is a great game and rather unique in today’s landscape.
The trailer, which you can watch below is rather rare in itself, as Japan doesn’t have a big culture related to critic reviews, so a trailer for the Japanese audience citing reviews from Western media is pretty peculiar. While it’s not unheard of, it’s certainly uncommon.
Unicorn Overlord is currently available for PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch since its recent release on March 8, 2024. If you’re a fan of physical copies you can purchase one on Amazon.
Despite the fact that it’s published by Atlus, which has been very keen on releasing its games on PC, a PC version is not available and we don’t know whether it’ll ever come.
The game focuses on the story of a rebel army led by a young prince whose land has been conquered by a tyrannical Empire. He then roams the continent to find allies and build up his power to fight back and free his people.
