As a game built around the very spirit of creativity, it’s not surprising that the Minecraft community frequently shows off some incredible creations, though one project recently shared by a talented fan presents what Minecraft itself might look like if it was a fully 2D side-scrolling game instead of the huge 3D sandbox it’s known as. Various fan games inspired by Minecraft in the past have taken the form of such a 2D game, and even some official artwork for the game pays homage to this classic 2D style.

Minecraft’s Recent Wolf Upgrades Need One Cherry On Top

While Minecraft has directly inspired plenty of similar sandbox games in the past, a work of fan art recently shared by the player known online as Hot_Comfortable_111 shows off what Minecraft may have looked like in a world where it took the form of a 2D side-scrolling game instead. This adorable yet incredibly detailed project features artwork of two different environments – the surface of the Overworld itself, and a large cave complete with a waterfall. The art style used by the artist to illustrate the environments and mobs in these images seems to share some similarities with some of the official 2D artwork often used to promote Minecraft‘s mob votes and the like.
The artwork goes a step further by demonstrating how the UI might fit into a 2D version of Minecraft, with the hotbar instead being placed vertically to the left of the screen and the health and experience bars being placed in the corner beside it. While this project might call to mind Terraria, this charming fan art has led many other fans to wonder what a fully two-dimensional version of Minecraft itself might be like to play.
How Minecraft is Still Changing in 2024
While it’s safe to say that Minecraft will remain as the 3D sandbox that it is, it certainly is an ever-shifting 3D sandbox.
