I have a lot of time for Lorrie Goldstein; however, like many other opinion writers, he tends to put all the Palestinian demonstrators in one basket. There is no doubt that some are antisemitic, but I believe the majority are rightly concerned with the plight of the people in Gaza.

Thousands have been killed by Israeli forces, mostly women and children, and thousands have been orphaned.

One way to get these demonstrations to either cease or decrease substantially is for a ceasefire to be implemented. However, without pressure from Washington, which appears to condone Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s tactics, innocents will continue to die and suffer immeasurably.

HOCKEY CAN HELP

Re: LILLEY: Bernardo and Magnotta live in swank prison due to Liberal move, online, March 4

I am not sure that having a hockey rink or other playing surface qualifies an institution as being a swank prison. (Editor’s note: The prison service has since said there is no functioning rink at the prison.)

Although one can question whether prisoners should be allowed to play hockey on a regular rink, at a minimum they should be allowed to play ball hockey. As a child, I spent many hours playing ball hockey with neighbourhood friends. We were able to have very energetic and competitive games without injuring anyone with our potentially lethal sticks. We never had referees.

Learning how to compete against others in a safe and disciplined way while wielding a dangerous object is a valuable skill for both children and prisoners. I am not saying what type of prison Bernardo or Magnotta should be in, but hockey of any type can be a valuable recreation for the vast majority of prisoners.

JOE ALL FIRED UP

The seniors I know have more energy during the day than the evening. Interestingly, and for whatever reason, President Joe Biden had more energy last Thursday evening than at any time he’s been seen during the past three years in the daytime. As a matter of fact, Biden was so fired up, his voice could still be heard even with the TV on mute.

Having said that, my takeaway from Biden’s State of the Union (which isn’t as great as he thinks) Address could be summed up with two songs: Rebel Yell and Shout!
