Lovecraftian fans, this is your calling. Menace from the Deep is an upcoming deckbuilder roguelite that combines unearthly beings with the roaring 20s of America. Heavily inspired by the works of Lovecraft, this 2D horror will take you on a journey through a cultist society with the ever-looming threat of the omnious creature, Cthulu.
The planned release window is 2024, with no firm launch date as of yet. However, there is a demo that will be available in February 2024 via the official Menace From the Deep Steam page! You can also add the game to your wishlist so you can keep up to date with its development.
Choose Wisely
There’s a nice variety of characters to choose from when you first start your playthrough, allowing you to experiment with a range of abilities and decks to find the best one for you – this also keeps the gameplay fresh if you wish to start a new save file!
From the looks of it, Menace from the Deep is mainly a visual novel-esque affair, with decision-based mechanics and strategic roguelite combat. The sci-fi and fantasy themes are also on point, with gloomy environments throughout and terrifyingly uncanny enemies that emerge from deep below.
Bringing Science Fiction to the 1920s
The art seems to take inspiration from Noir but with a splash of colour, tying in to the 1920s setting. This is also represented by each character’s costumes, with Trilby hats, sharp suits, smart waistcoats, and old-fashioned pocket watches.
For those who love historical themes in video games, fans of sc-fi fantasy, or those familiar with H.P. Lovecraft’s works, I reckon Menace from the Deep is well worth a try. The overall game mechanics may be pretty simple, but you’re required to be strategic with your deck and resources, making for a super engaging roguelite.
