Fans of retro-inspired board games have just gotten some great news. Steamforged Games, the tabletop developer that has made its name with crafting bespoke tabletop experiences, acquired the rights to the Street Masters board game and has plans for long-term support.
The Street Masters board game acquisition
According to a report from ICV2, Steamforged Games acquired the rights to the Street Masters board game from its original publisher, Blacklist Games.
According to the report, Steamforged plans to take charge of the game’s ongoing development, production, and distribution, as well as expanding the game.
Steamforged Games’ work in the tabletop industry is impressive. In addition to creating high-quality licensed board games based on Horizon Forbidden West and Monster Hunter World Iceborne, the studio is also behind original works like Bardsung and the Epic Encounters product line.
Street Masters was originally released in September 2019. It was designed by Adam and Brady Sadler, whose design credits include The Walking Dead: No Sanctuary, and was distributed by Asmodee.
The game itself is heavily inspired by retro beat ‘em up video games like Double Dragon and Streets of Rage. Players take on the roles of different fighters, each of which has an arsenal of Fighter cards at their disposal. Players work together to fight mobs of minions, followed by a challenging boss fight.
The original release of the Street Masters board game was designed for 1-4 players. The game came with miniatures, custom dice, cards, double-sided map tiles, snap-on bases, and over 200 tokens.
“Street Masters is a game we’ve loved for a long time,” said Rich Loxam, CEO and cofounder of Steamforged. “We look forward to taking the reins, welcoming the fans into our thriving community, and exploring the exciting possibilities for the Street Masters world.”
In addition, Steamforged Games will be taking over Blacklist’s Indiegogo campaign for the Street Masters board game. The campaign concluded in 2020, raising $286,993 from 1,614 backers. The campaign still hasn’t been completely fulfilled.
Steamforged will provide backers with updates on the fulfillment process in the near future.
