PS4 is “Still an Important Part of Our Business”, Says SIE Co-CEO

Despite slightly missing its projected number of PS5 sales for the previous fiscal year, Sony confirmed it was already its most profitable console generation yet. However, four years into its lifecycle and rumors of a PS5 Pro circulating, the company still considers the PS4 an “important part of our business.”

During the Game and Network Services Segment of Sony’s Business Meeting, it was revealed that about half of all monthly active console users were on PS4 as of April 30th, 2024. That’s a whopping 49 million users.

In a web call (transcription via VGC), SIE Platform Business Group co-CEO Hideaki Nishino said, “As you can see, the PlayStation 5 user base has continued to grow significantly, driving to half of our monthly active consoles. While the PlayStation 4 is still an important part of our business, our PlayStation 5 players are even more engaged than in our previous generation, and we expect these trends to continue.”

Of course, the focus is on the rapid growth of the PS5. Though it saw a 12 percent drop in full-game spending in its first four years compared to the PS4, it’s generated $106 billion in sales while seeing 26 percent higher life-to-date spending in the same period. It’s currently forecasting 18 million PS5 sales in this fiscal year – if the PS5 Pro does launch in this window, its impact should be interesting.
