Sinéad O’Connor estate demands Trump stop playing her music at rallies

Sinéad O’Connor’s estate has called the late singer’s rendition of “Nothing Compares 2 U” being used at Donald Trump’s campaign rallies an “outrage.”

“Throughout her life, it is well known that Sinéad O’Connor lived by a fierce moral code defined by honesty, kindness, fairness and decency towards her fellow human beings,” O’Connor’s estate told Variety in a statement. “It was with outrage therefore that we learned that Donald Trump has been using her iconic performance of ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’ at his political rallies.”

Trump, who is the presumed Republican nominee for U.S. presidency, has featured the song ahead of speeches in Iowa, Maryland, North Carolina and Pennsylvania. The 1990 song, written by Prince, spent five weeks at #1 in Canada and propelled O’Connor to global stardom.

“It is no exaggeration to say that Sinéad would have been disgusted, hurt and insulted to have her work misrepresented in this way by someone who she herself referred to as a ‘biblical devil,’” the statement adds.

“As the guardians of her legacy, we demand that Donald Trump and his associates desist from using her music immediately.”

O’Connor died in London in July 2023 at the age of 56. She died of natural causes a year after the passing of her 17-year-old son Shane in 2022.

O’Connor was nominated for the Rock and Roll Hall of fame in 2024 alongside the likes of Ozzy Osbourne, Mariah Carey, Cher, and Sade.

A long line of musicians have demanded Trump stop playing their music at his rallies. The list includes Neil Young, Nickelback, Elton John, Bruce Springsteen, Phil Collins, Linkin Park, Leonard Cohen, Prince, Rihanna, Tom Petty, Adele, Aerosmith and The Beatles.
