Historical strategy game Millennia announced with new cinematic trailer

Paradox Interactive, the publisher best known for Stellaris and Cities: Skylines 2, has officially announced Millennia with a cinematic trailer today, confirming recent rumors. Millennia will be a historical, turn-based 4X game following “the course of history across ten ages”, according to the official Steam page.

Millennia has not confirmed a release window yet. It will be available on PC via Steam, and there’s no word on support for other platforms. You can watch today’s official teaser trailer for the new title on Paradox Interactive’s YouTube channel:

Millennia will undoubtedly draw many comparisons to Civilization, which remains the high bar for 4X gameplay thanks to its outstanding scope and intuitive loop. The real hook is that players will create their very own nation in Millennia, but there are also some other gameplay twists.

The Steam page explains that players will also contend with Crisis Ages of war and sickness. Today’s trailer hints at rogue AI, which will undoubtedly be one of the more novel challenges in the game.

Players will also get to gradually customize their nation over time with Nations Spirits, which allow you to pursue exploration, finances and other various paths. Building your own culture would be pretty neat, since Civilization is so tightly thematic.

Paradox Interactive is fairly comfortable with publishing grand strategy titles. They consistently update their Stellaris franchise, and they even recently announced Star Trek Infinite, which launches in October and officially opened pre-orders earlier this month.

But a cinematic trailer and some screenshots only go so far. Once more of the gameplay is revealed, curious gamers will get a clearer idea if Millennia can distinguish itself a bit more, since it doesn’t have familiar IP to rely on.
