It’s been just a little over 12 hours since former President Donald Trump was shot at a rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, in a failed assassination attempt. While Americans are still reeling from the shocking news, the rest of the world is also responding, with world leaders largely expressing their dismay and concern over the heinous act.
The former president has received an outpouring of support from G7 leaders as well as others. Below, a sampling of the reactions from across the world.
From the newly installed UK Prime Minister, Keir Starmer:
I am appalled by the shocking scenes at President Trump’s rally and we send him and his family our best wishes.
Political violence in any form has no place in our societies and my thoughts are with all the victims of this attack.

From French President Emmanuel Macron:
Mes pensées au Président Donald Trump, victime d’une tentative d’assassinat, à qui j’adresse mes vœux de prompt rétablissement. Un militant est décédé, plusieurs sont blessés. C’est un drame pour nos démocraties. La France partage le choc et l’indignation du peuple américain.

From Argentinian President Javier Milei (who’s had a good deal to say about the horrific incident, placing the blame squarely on “the international left”):
Todo mi apoyo y solidaridad al Presidente y candidato Donald Trump, víctima de un COBARDE intento de asesinato que puso en riesgo su vida y la de cientos de personas.
No sorprende la desesperación de la izquierda internacional que hoy ve cómo su ideología nefasta expira, y está… pic.twitter.com/iWN9Q7YFXX

[Translation]: All my support and solidarity to President and candidate Donald Trump, victim of a COWARDLY assassination attempt that put his life and that of hundreds of people at risk.
The desperation of the international left is not surprising, as today it sees its harmful ideology expire, and is willing to destabilize democracies and promote violence to screw itself into power. In fear of losing at the polls, they resort to terrorism to impose their retrograde and authoritarian agenda.
I hope for the speedy recovery of President Trump and that the elections in the United States are held fairly, peacefully and democratically.

There’s no indication of a direct response from Russia’s Vladimir Putin, but his spokesperson, Dmitry Peskov, in an instance of making a salient point while likely appreciating the opportunity to stir the pot, weighed in:
“We do not believe that the attempt to eliminate and assassinate Trump was organised by the current authorities,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.
But the atmosphere around candidate Trump … provoked what America is confronting today.”
China’s foreign ministry has also expressed concern over the attack:
Chinese Foreign Ministry said in a statement that China is concerned about the attack and President Xi Jinping has already extended his sympathies to Trump.
