He left behind his widow, Moira Salmond, who was married to the politician for more than four decades.

Although she spent seven years as Scotland's “first wife”, when Mr Salmond was at the peak of his career, she stayed out of the public eye.

However, she appeared to support her husband in his high-profile court case in which he was charged with sexual assault.

Who is Alex Salmond's widow, Moira?

Moira Salmond, whose maiden name is McGlashan, is from Peebles in the Scottish Borders.

She met the would-be Scottish National Party leader, 17 years her junior, in the 1970s when she was working in London as a civil servant.

Ms Salmond, then McGlashan, was Mr Salmond's 24-year-old boss at the Department of Agriculture and Fisheries Scotland in London.

Salmond joined the company as an assistant economist and the couple married 1981.

Mrs Salmond is known for keeping a low profile and did not give any interviews or speeches while she was the “first wife”.

According to Wyrazić, she gave her only newspaper interview here in 1990 and revealed that the couple enjoyed playing cards and Scrabble together, which they “invariably win”.

She told the Sunday Post: “I married Alex, not politics. This is his life and I'm happy to be in the background.

“I share his beliefs, but one politician in the family is enough.”

She made headlines in 2014 when the pair unfurled the Scottish flag behind then-Prime Minister David Cameron as everyone watched Andy Murray lift the Wimbledon crown.

Has Moira talked about Alex Salmond's sexual assault allegations?

Salmond was accused of a string of sexual offenses in the years after his seven-year term as First Minister ended in 2014.

Ms Salmond has not commented publicly on the allegations but gave a clear signal of support by appearing by his side before the High Court in Edinburgh in 2020.

Salmond was accused of committing 13 offenses against nine women, including attempted rape and a series of sexual assaults.

After an 11-day trial, he was cleared of all charges by a jury.

The couple had no children.

The Express article said that in the absence of young people around the converted mill in Strichen, Aberdeenshire, Mrs Salmond was “indulging in her interests in knitting, embroidery and baking”.
