Newcastle legend Alan Shearer claims he was 'reliably told'. Eddie Howe has not been contacted by the FA about the prospect of becoming England manager.

Widespread reports on Tuesday evening indicated that the Chelsea boss and Bayern Munich head coach Thomas Tuchel have reached an agreement over the management of the Three Lions.

Interim manager Lee Carsley oversaw three wins and a defeat on his appointment in August and is expected to remain in charge next month for England's Nations League doubleheader against Greece and the Republic of Ireland.

The FA began the search for the next England manager in July. Gareth Southgate resigned after the team finished second at Euro 2024.

Pep Guardiola, considered by many to be the best head coach in world football, has been investigated by the FA. However, the Spaniard is expected to extend his stay at Manchester City for another 12 months.

England coaches Graham Potter, Frank Lampard and Howe were also linked throughout the summer, but Shearer is on good authority that the Newcastle manager was never even contacted.

– It happened so quickly. The other day we said that maybe there's a reason why Lee Carsley took himself out of the game, because that's probably what he did,” the former Newcastle and England forward went on to say. The Rest is a Football Podcast.

'Maybe you (Gary Lineker) were right that he knew something we all didn't.

I hope they talked to the English managers.

“I was told they had not spoken to or examined Eddie Howe as I was reliably told, which is a big surprise to me considering he would have been an outstanding English prospect.”

Shearer has no problem with the German becoming Tuchel's national team manager, provided he was an “outstanding” candidate for the job.

Asked if he was happy with the German taking over, Shearer replied: “So if he's an outstanding candidate, then yes!” If he's the one.

“But there would be a bit of concern about what the path is for English coaches?” If they brought in this center, as we thought, and want to promote English trainers, then an outstanding candidate (would be Howe).

“In a way I'm happy because Newcastle won't lose their manager and he's a great manager.

“For me he would be the main candidate from England and to know that he hasn't even been tested is very surprising to me.”

Howe replaced Steve Bruce as Newcastle manager in November 2021 and led the club to 11th place in the Premier League in his first season in charge.

Newcastle secured qualification for the Champions League by finishing fourth the following season, and Howe also led the Magpies to the Carabao Cup final, where they were defeated by Manchester United.

The 46-year-old came under some pressure last season, but Toon finished seventh after winning six from ten at the end of the season.
