In 1988, Beetlejuice (Michael Keaton) was the ghost with the most, gleefully terrorizing the living Deetz family and trying to make a child bride of their sulky goth teen Lydia (Winona Ryder). Sure, he was defeated, and harmony and happiness between the living and dead persevered. Now, 26 years later, he’s back — and she’s back — with Beetlejuice Beetlejuice.
Also returning for this Beetlejuice sequel is Catherine O’Hara, who was a fashion icon as the fiercely creative Delia Deetz. Plus, director Tim Burton has also brought along his Wednesday leading lady Jenna Ortega for a family reunion that’s sure to be madcap and menacing.
In the new trailer, the Deetz family is reeling from tragedy as three generations of them return to their haunted house in Winter River. While there’s no sign of the ghosts who once helped Lydia with her homework and self-worth, her daughter Astrid (Ortega) comes upon a model town that still holds a mischievous poltergeist. The apple doesn’t fall far from the tree when it comes to cavalierly calling on the dead.
New to the creepy cast is Justin Theroux, Monica Bellucci, Arthur Conti, and Poor Things‘ Willem Dafoe. All this, plus Michael Keaton back in that classic striped suit? As the lands of the living and the dead collide once more, we are happy to be haunted.
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice opens nationwide on September 6, also in IMAX.
