A new poll released this week shows former President Trump with a strong lead over Immigration Vice President Kamala Harris — even after Harris tried to present herself as the best candidate to secure the southern border.

D Quinnipiac Poll Harris is ahead of Trump in Pennsylvania, with Trump ahead in Michigan and Wisconsin, according to Wednesday's poll. Three Rust Belt states are being closely watched because they could determine which candidate will be the next president.

But on the question of who is best at handling immigration, Trump has the edge in all three states. He had a four-point lead at Pennsylvania (50-46), a nine-point lead at Michigan (53-44) and an eight-point lead at Wisconsin (52-44).

Trump was also favored in every state on the economy and managing the conflict in the Middle East, while Harris was favored on abortion and protecting democracy.

Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin, along with Georgia, North Carolina, Arizona and Nevada, had razor-thin margins that decided President Biden's 2020 White House victory over Trump. And seven states will determine whether Trump or Harris wins the 2024 presidential election.

Pennsylvania, Michigan and Wisconsin are the three Rust Belt states that make up the Democrats' so-called “Blue Wall.”

The team is reliable Trump won all three states by a quarter before briefly capturing them to win the White House in the 2016 election.

A recent Marquette Law School poll found that 49% favor Trump and just 37% favor Harris on immigration, with 8% saying they would be equal and 6% saying neither is better on the issue.

Critics have also pointed to his more left-wing policies as a senator and 2019 presidential candidate — including his stances on immigration funding and the detention of illegal immigrants.

Campaign Harris says his perspective has changed since 2019 and has been shaped by his involvement in the administration. This year, his campaign touted his past as a prosecutor and touted his support of a bipartisan Senate bill to increase funding at the border.

His campaign noted a recent sharp decline in border encounters since President Biden signed a presidential proclamation limiting asylum entries in June. He accused Trump of scrapping the border bill for political purposes and “playing political games.”
