Two weird shots make waves in NHL + Devils win

Curious goal conceded

Marc-Andre Fleury was severely sidelined in his 1,030th NHL game. The Minnesota Wild goaltender allowed a “rarely stupid” goal just 27 seconds into the game in Edmonton. Because goal scorer Leon Draisaitl must have had other intentions besides targeting the penalty area…

Minnesota ultimately defeated the Oilers 5-3.

Jaroslav Askarov didn't get off to a great start either. In his first game with the San Jose Sharks (2-3 vs. the St. Louis Blues), he was defeated after just 11 seconds. Askarov's shot from behind the goal fell to his opponent Radek Faksa, who quickly passed the ball to goal scorer Nathan Walker:

Hang out with the Swiss

New Jersey Devils-Carolina Hurricanes 4:2

Nico Hischier (New Jersey): 2 shots, 21 minutes and 38 seconds TOI.
Timo Meier (New Jersey): 2 shots, TOI 16 minutes and 19 seconds.
Jonas Siegenthaler (NJ): 1 shot, 20:12 TOI.

The New Jersey Devils defeated the Carolina Hurricanes 4-2 to move into first place in the conference standings. The man of the match was Swede Jesper Blatter, who contributed two goals and an assist. The three Swiss guys playing for the Devils received significant playing time but were unable to convert it into points. In the Metropolitan Division, Carolina and New Jersey lead with 28 points each, even though the Hurricanes have played three fewer games.

Columbus Blue Jackets – Tampa Bay Lightning 7:6 nV

JJ Moser (Tampa Bay): 1 assist, 1 shot, 23 points and 28 minutes TOI.

Janis Moser and the Tampa Bay Lightning fell to the Columbus Blue Jackets 6-7 in overtime. The visitors from Florida State quickly took a 3-0 lead but then let up. After Moser's free throw, Columbus tied the score at 3-3. The Zealand defender contributed an assist in the 6:6 equalizer.

Chicago Blackhawks-Florida Panthers 3:1

Philipp Kurashev (Chicago): Surplus

Filip Kurashev is currently in a slump. The Swiss of the Chicago Blackhawks was ejected from the stands during the game against the Stanley Cup champion Florida Panthers (3:1).

Coach Luke Richardson talked about Kurashev needing a reset and a fresh start. “If things aren't going well, you might play a little more cautiously. But that doesn't help him or us,” Richardson said of Kurashev. “He has to show more intensity again. We are working with him to make sure he finds a way to regain his old strength.”

Ovechkin injured

Now the extent of Alexander Ovechkin’s injury has become clear. The Washington Capitals' Russian forward suffered a fractured left fibula. He will be out four to six weeks — longer than at any time in his career.

No other player has scored more goals this season than Ovechkin, who has 15 goals. The 39-year-old is on pace to catch Wayne Gretzky's all-time record (894 goals), but is 27 shy of that record. (Random Access Memory/SDA)

Simon Oman will travel to Lillehammer this weekend for the opening match of the World Cup. The 43-year-old from Toggenburg was given a starting spot not as a thank you for his services, but after passing an internal qualifying round.

The Swiss ski jumping scene now spans three generations: Simon Ammann is already older than veterans Gregor Deschwanden (33) and Killian Peier (29) ) owned for ten years or more. The duo, in turn, join the World Cup squad at a different time than the roughly five-man U20 group who are now also looking to establish themselves at the highest level and, along with 18-year-old Felix Terenz , a player with Switzerland has captured four World Cup starting spots at the beginning of the season.
