Nintendo has confirmed the file sizes for the upcoming Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD Switch remasters. Both of these games were first announced during the September 2023 Nintendo Direct, and instantly became highly anticipated releases. Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door is a long-awaited remaster of the GameCube original, with Luigi’s game being a complete port, bringing the classic title from the Nintendo 3DS to the Switch. Both of these remasters will also add some new gameplay features and remastered graphics.
While a release window of 2024 was provided in their initial trailers, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD both got launch dates during MAR10 day. The Thousand-Year Door remaster will launch first, releasing on May 23, while Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD will launch on June 27. With both of these games only being a few months away, Nintendo has updated its Nintendo eShop listings with their file sizes, giving fans an idea of how much space they’ll need to download them digitally.
Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door on Switch Has New Gameplay Features
Nintendo confirms that the Switch-exclusive remake of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door will include some new gameplay features.
According to Nintendo’s official website and their respective Switch eShop pages, both Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD are rather small compared to other games released on the system. The Thousand-Year Door is 5.088 GB, while Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD is 3.101 GB on the Nintendo Switch. For comparison’s sake, the last Paper Mario game released on the Switch, The Origami King, was around 6.4 GB, and Luigi’s Mansion 3 was 6.3 GB.
What are the file sizes of Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door and Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD?
- Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door: 5.088 GB
- Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD: 3.101 GB
The smaller file sizes required for The Thousand-Year Door and Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD are fairly accurate to them being remasters of the original games. When Luigi’s Mansion 2 launched on the Nintendo 3DS as Dark Moon, a lot of its assets were likely compressed to work on the handheld system, as that version of the game only took up around 842 MB. Meanwhile, the original GameCube version of The Thousand-Year Door was roughly 1.1 GB, with the Switch remaster being five times its original size. The bigger file sizes for both of these games are likely due to Nintendo remastering every aspect of these two games.
Between the upcoming releases of Princess Peach Showtime, Paper Mario: The Thousand-Year Door, and Luigi’s Mansion 2 HD, the Nintendo Switch has impressive exclusives releasing throughout 2024. With recent rumors about how the Switch’s successor will likely launch in the following year, 2024 might be a good send off for Nintendo’s hybrid console, provided that those rumors are true and a new console release is just around the corner.
