Presidential candidate Donald Trump's move on a garbage truck has caused a stir after he made controversial remarks about “trash” and Puerto Rico on the US campaign trail.

Trump spoke to reporters from a large vehicle in the battleground state of Wisconsin. He wore an orange and yellow garbage collector vest – which he later wore on stage at a campaign event. Biden showed how he and his Vice President Kamala Harris view millions of Americans.

Comedians causing trouble for Trump's campaign

The controversy began with a tasteless joke at a Trump campaign event on Sunday. A comedian has described the U.S. territory of Puerto Rico as an island of garbage floating in the ocean. The announcement sparked widespread outrage in Puerto Rico. That could be a problem for Trump because about 500,000 Puerto Ricans live in the hotly contested and potentially electorally decisive state of Pennsylvania alone.

Biden addressed the scandal in a call with the Latino community on Tuesday. He speaks positively of Puerto Ricans and criticizes Trump. However, a line in the video he shared online could also be read as: “The only trash I see is his fans.” It's unclear from the recording whether Biden actually called Trump's supporters ” Trash”—or the prevailing opinions and statements about Latinos. Official White House records show the latter appears to be true. The Trump campaign spread another interpretation. Biden, 81, often hesitates when speaking.

Biden himself later emphasized on the online platform that

“His demonization of Latinos is unjustified. That's all I'm saying.”

Harris, running alongside Trump just over a week before the presidential election, emphasized her opposition to criticizing people for what they voted for. She wants to be president for all Americans—even those who didn't vote for her. Biden also clarified his remarks.

“What do you think of my garbage disposal?”

Trump has said in recent weeks that the United States has become “the trash can of the world” due to an alleged “invasion” of criminal immigrants from around the world. On Wednesday, Trump said in Green Bay, Wisconsin, that Harris would allow 300 million immigrants into the country as president. The total population of the United States is approximately 337 million.

“What do you think of my trash collection?” Trump asked reporters in his car at the airport. A few meters later, he was in an armored vehicle heading to the campaign trail, as he later admitted. (Sudan Development Authority/Department of Political Affairs/Associated Press)
