New Delhi has one of the worst air quality cities in the world. The capital has been shrouded in thick smog for weeks. Air pollution in New Delhi often reaches very high levels, especially during winter.
This year’s numbers are particularly high. So high you can see the smoke on satellite images. The city's air quality hit its worst record in five years. The dust pollution level is “severe”. New Delhi's air quality index is 1100. An index between 0 and 50 indicates good air. Values above 300 are considered dangerous.

The first measure has been implemented: heavy vehicles are no longer allowed into the city. Many schools have been closed, construction work has been canceled and flights have been cancelled.
Why do values increase in winter?
In addition to significant emissions from traffic, construction work and illegal waste burning, two factors contribute to the presence of smog in cities when temperatures drop and winds are light. In addition, burning crop residues increases air pollution.

Many farmers burned rice paddies to plant new crops. The practice is illegal and carries hefty fines, but it is still used because it is a cost-effective method of cleaning up residue.
How do people deal with it?
Residents likened the situation to the end of the world. One affected person told the Guardian that those who could afford it were fleeing the city. Another person reported that she became ill due to air pollution: “When I arrived at the workplace, I was exhausted. I felt short of breath and had a burning sensation in my eyes and nose.” Workplaces should be equipped with air purifiers. She wanted to buy this for herself and her children. But it will cost three months’ salary.

What measures is the government taking?
Maren Peters, SRF's South Asia correspondent, said in an interview: “Politicians are only taking short-term measures and failing to address the root causes of emissions. “No one will take responsibility. (Science and Technology Committee)
