Tomasz Tuchel is reportedly in talks with the FA about becoming England's next manager.
Tuchel (51) has been out of action since leaving Bayern Munich at the end of last season.
He previously managed Borussia Dortmund, PSG and Chelsea, among others, famously lifting the Champions League with the Blues in 2021.
Lee Carlsey is currently the interim coach of the Three Lions and has won three of their four matches so far, although the former Ireland midfielder is increasingly expected to return as England Under-21 manager after the November international break.
Several candidates – both English and foreign – have been touted as a permanent replacement for Gareth Southgate, who left his role after England's Euro 2024 final defeat for Spain in July.
Thomas Tuchel is reportedly in talks with the FA to become England's next manager
Mail Sport reported back in September that the FA had begun private inquiries about the appointment of external candidates, and Pep Guardiola was among those approached before the start of the season.
Now, according to Sky Sports News, Tuchel is in talks with the FA about becoming the next England manager.
The German coach would be seen as a sensible choice for an English side looking to win their first trophy in almost 60 years, confirming his winning pedigree as a coach.
While at PSG, he won six trophies, and while coaching Chelsea, he led Bayern to the Bundesliga title and lifted the UEFA Super Cup and the FIFA Club World Cup.
However, he could also be seen as controversial given that he is not an English coach and England have not had a foreign manager as coach since the departure of Fabio Capello in 2012.
Since leaving Bayern in the summer, Tuchel has been linked with several high-profile jobs across Europe, including Manchester United, and the 51-year-old held talks with Sir Jim Ratcliffe in Monaco in the summer before withdrawing his interest.
Talks with Tuchel also began after the FA contacted Man City manager Guardiola about the role.
Many FA members have long seen Guardiola as a “dream” candidate to replace Gareth Southgate.
The likelihood of Carsley being interim boss after last week's humiliating defeat to Greece is diminishing by the day with the coach's increasingly misleading comments about his suitability for the role.
Even Carsley himself doesn't seem to want the job, with the boss saying he'll “hopefully… go back to the (under)-21 category.”
He then caused further confusion after another victory over lowly Finland by claiming that the Three Lions role was intended for “a world-class coach who won trophies”, before later emphasizing that this did not rule him out.
The FA kept an open mind regarding another appointment and saw Carsley as a real candidate. However, recently, based on his public appearances, there has been a feeling that he may not be ready for the top job.
Guardiola's contract with City expires in the summer and it seems unlikely the Spaniard will leave before then, which could pose difficulties for the FA given England are likely to play six games during that period, although Carsley is already involved in November's games against Greece and Ireland .
Nevertheless, there is a belief among senior members of the FA hierarchy that it is worth waiting for Guardiola.
England would be unable to match Guardiola's current wages of £20 million at City, which could pose an obvious obstacle.
However, the job of England head coach is one of the highest paid international coaching positions in the world. Southgate, for example, earned around £6 million a year.
