Winter is coming and sweaters and scarves Emerging from dusty corners, the essential accessory this time of year is a steaming hot drink in your hand.

But with coffee prices skyrocketing (we recently heralded the era of £5 coffees) and Pret subscriptions remaining a distant memory, not all of us have the spare cash to buy our everyday flat white.

But now, Morrisons has announced that it will be offering an unlimited 'Winter Refill' on Hot Drinks in all its cafes nationwide – with prices starting from just £1.85.

In an apparent play on the government, the winter fuel allowance supermarket giant claims will “keep customers warm during the cold season.”

Pret pulls out of 'too good to be true' coffee deal.

That comes later Pret caused outrage by scrapping its free drinks offer on its subscription plan only last month.

While subscribers could order up to five free drinks a day for a flat rate of £30 a month, along with a 20% discount on food, customers can no longer enjoy these benefits. From September, subscriptions cost £10 and include up to five half-price drinks a day, with no additional food discount.

Clare Clough, managing director of the coffee chain, called the four-year program “too good to be true”, adding that their current focus is on “better value for everyone” – subscribers and non-subscribers alike.

What is Morrisons' Winter Top Up?

A scheme introduced to help customers stay warm in cold weather, the Winter Refill Bonus includes unlimited refills of all self-service hot drinks at Morrisons Café, from teas and coffees to hot chocolate.

The offer is valid in selected Morrisonana Cafes for a wide range of winter warmers, including fruit teas, lattes and cappuccinos.

Customers can also satisfy their sweet tooth by choosing a decadent slice of Victorian sponge cake or a tart Sicilian lemon muffin for a small additional price, while a hot drink-dessert duo costs just £4.

Equally economical are Morrisons' breakfast, lunch and dinner options, with sandwiches on offer priced at £6.50 and free food for children under 16 when accompanying adults who spend £5 or more on a meal.

Speaking about the initiative, Becky Wilson, buyer for Morrisons Café, said: “We're always looking for ways to give our customers more reasons to visit our cafés – and that's exactly what the Winter Refill Allowance is for.”

“In addition to high-quality food at affordable prices, our cafés are a space for communities to connect, work and relax, and now they can do so over a warm cup of their choice.”

Other stores in the country offering similar ways to enjoy affordable hot drinks include Wetherspoons, where customers can get an unlimited supply of hot drinks for £1.56 – sometimes even cheaper – depending on location.

You can come in at any time, from breakfast until closing time, and enjoy free refills of coffee, tea and a wide range of drinks to choose from, from flat whites, cappuccinos, lattes, mochas, espressos and hot chocolate.

Particularly popular with students and retirees, the pub chain's CEO, Tim Martin, went so far as to say that “Lavazza coffee sales are increasing” and “free refills are believed to be responsible for spontaneous breakdance shows among retired customers.”

Other coffee and bakery chains such as Gail's, Costa and Caffe Nero use a loyalty card system where you get a free drink after accumulating enough points by purchasing a certain number of drinks.
