This is what Switzerland’s population will look like in 2023

The Federal Office of Statistics (BfS) today published adjusted figures for “Switzerland Population 2023”. These charts show the current population status and its development in recent years. We present here the most important of these graphics.

population

In 1990, about 6.8 million people still lived in Switzerland; by 2023, this number was close to 9 million. This target was exceeded in June 2024. Nearly three-quarters of the population has a Swiss passport, and more than a third of residents live alone.

There are fewer and fewer children

In 2023, there will be 9 births per 1,000 inhabitants. This rate decreases with each generation. In 1960, the number was almost 20, about twice that number.

Citizenship at birth

Of the approximately 80,000 live births, approximately 24,000 were born out of wedlock. The average age at first birth is 35.3 years for men and 32.4 years for women.

age at death

The overall upward trend in deaths is linked to a growing aging population. This increase is particularly pronounced in the age group of 80 years or older.

population growth

The BfS calculated three basic scenarios for population growth. The reference scenario (A-00-2020) continues developments from the past few years. The “high” scenario (B-00-2020) is based on a combination of assumptions that would lead to faster population growth, while the “low” scenario (C-00-2020) is based on a combination of assumptions that would lead to lower population growth. In scenario B, Switzerland will have approximately 11.5 million inhabitants by 2050.
