GC has announced Marco Schällibaum's successor. Thomas Olar will take over as record champion, effective immediately. The German had previously served as Magath's assistant coach and successfully acted as the savior twice.

GC is currently at the bottom of the Chinese Super League standings. Two weeks ago, coach Marco Sullivan was fired. After several rejections from Peter Zeidler and Patrick Frame, FC Zurich now found what they were looking for and were able to bring in a new man on the sidelines in Thomas Olar. We summarize for you the Germans' previous stations.

FSV Frankfurt

July 1, 2006 – October 4, 2009, 111 games, averaging 1.66 points per game

Three years before the end of his playing career, Olar took over the second team of FSV Frankfurt and was promoted from the regional league to the state league.

After his playing career ended, the German took over as first-team coach. In his first season as coach, the then-Class A team was promoted to the then-Three Division Regional League. Frankfurt has suffered only one defeat in the league all season.

Thomas Olar also performed well in the regional league and was immediately promoted to second place in the Bundesliga. In the first season, FSV almost avoided relegation. They avoided relegation by just two points. When he was unable to celebrate victory in the first eight games of the new season, Olar resigned as coach.

“I had a very successful time at FSV but I feel it's time to part ways.”

Thomas Olar decided to leave Frankfurt.

red bull leipzig

After a break of almost a year, the native of the Bavarian town of Ossenfurt took over the management of then regional league side Leipzig. But Olar, ranked fifth, obviously missed the opportunity to advance with today's Champions League participants. One year later, Olar was released from Leipzig with an average of 1.88 points per game.

“Why not? I had this before at Leipzig. Since I became a coach I purely prefer it.”

When Bild asked him if he would continue drinking Red Bull despite being sacked by Leipzig, he responded verbally.

At Red Bull Leipzig, Olar missed promotion and had to leave again.

Ingolstadt 04

Olar took over Ingolstadt in November 2011. At that time, the second-division team Ingolstadt was in a relegation battle and ranked bottom of the league. After taking over Olar, the Bavarians lost only four games in the league to avoid relegation.

Oral celebrates staying in the league with the team.

Oral stayed with the “Schanzer” team for another year before having to pack his bags at the FCI after a disappointing season that ended in 14th place.

FSV Frankfurt

After a brief spell as Felix Magath's assistant at Fulham, Olar returned to his first coaching role on a match day before the end of the 2014/2015 season. Before the last game against Dusseldorf, Frankfurt was in the relegation zone in the Bundesliga 2. FSV won 3-2 to secure their league spot.

Oral's contract is valid until June 30, 2016. During the season he announced that he would not renew his contract. However, the issue resolved itself as the coach was sacked five days before the end of the game. Previously, Frankfurt had failed to win seven consecutive games. Despite being dismissed early, FSV Frankfurt were relegated at the end of the season.

Karlsruhe SC

Olar spent a short and unhappy time at Karlsruhe Football Club. The German took over at Karlsruhe in the summer of 2016 – the contract was signed at Frankfurt before his release. In the first 15 games, he only achieved two wins and only scored 12 points in total. He was released before the winter break. Despite parting ways with Oral, KSC were relegated with just 25 points.

Ingolstadt 04

In April 2019, he returned to Ingolstadt Football Club. At the time of takeover, Ingolstadt was in serious danger of relegation, and despite picking up 16 points from their last seven games, FCI ended the league in the relegation zone. In this campaign, Wiesbaden won on away goals and Ingolstadt was relegated to the third division. Oral then left Ingolstadt again.

But in March 2020, the 51-year-old returned to third division club Ingolstadt. He succeeded Jeff Saibene, who was well-known in Switzerland. At this time, the FCI rankings were just behind the promotion spots. With Oral, “Schanzer” was successfully relegated. But this year they also lost the title due to the away goals rule. At the last minute, Nuremberg retained their league spot.

The following year Ingolstadt was relegated again. This time we were promoted because Osnabrück got beaten. Despite this, the expiring contract was not renewed and Olar left the club. The German described the reasons for the breakup:

“Those responsible have their ideas, I have mine, and anyone who knows the special relationship between me and the FCI knows that clearly: We can look at each other honestly and tell each other early on that this doesn't add up.”

Oddly enough, Ingolstadt's then sporting director Michael Genke would become his new assistant at GC.

SV Sandhausen

Tomas Oral's last collaboration to date was with SV Sandhausen. But this is very disappointing. In late February 2023, Olar took over the then second division team and was released after six games without a win. As a result, Sandhausen still failed to get out of the relegation quagmire and was relegated to the third division. The club president's conclusion to Olar's brief absence was less than impressive:

“We hope that through Thomas Olar we can provide a decisive boost to our success in the relegation battle. After picking up just two points in the last six games, including home games against St. Pauli and Groissefeldt Questionable match, we have to realize that unfortunately it didn't work out.
