This is how much streaming prices have risen in recent years

Streaming service Disney+ recently raised its fees again — and it's not the only one doing so. Almost all providers have increased their prices in the past 18 months.

Like so many other things in our lives, streaming subscriptions have become more expensive in recent years. More than half of the providers opened in the past 18 months. We'll show you where you'll have to dig deeper.

price

In mid-November, Disney+ announced that it would increase the price of a standard ad-free subscription from 12.90 francs to 14.90 francs. This corresponds to a price increase of 15.5%. When launched in March 2020, a single subscription will cost only 9.90 francs.

For other streaming services, price increases have been almost routine lately. Market leader Netflix last raised prices for Swiss customers in April 2024. Now, you have to pay 20.90 francs per month for the standard subscription.

Sky Show launches a new subscription structure in May 2024, resulting in a price increase. By the end of 2023, the price of Apple TV+ has increased by more than 30%.

Amazon Prime, on the other hand, has kept its prices low for years, with a subscription price of 9.99 francs and is currently the cheapest international provider on the market. Only local supplier oneplus can beat the price at 6.90 francs.

Despite its high surcharge in 2024, Apple TV+ remains in the top three cheapest subscription services. It's worth noting that Sky and Netflix's two cheaper subscriptions are still more expensive than some Full HD and 4K subscriptions.

Price setting method

We've selected standard subscription prices from the most important streaming providers in Switzerland. Discounted subscriptions with ads and without HD support have been omitted.

What does the provider have to offer?

Not only are the prices different, but the sizes of the products also vary greatly. The companies are pursuing different strategies: Apple and Disney, for example, are increasingly relying on their own titles, while Netflix and Amazon are investing in the rights to other titles. This means they have a bigger (but not necessarily better) catalog.

Netflix has the largest collection of movies and TV series, with 7,663, just ahead of its rival Amazon. Apple TV+ is the smallest provider, with only 252 titles. The strategy here: attract as many subscribers as possible with a few high-quality episodes.

Apple TV+ is clearly the most expensive per piece of content, which isn't surprising since they offer by far the least amount of content. Amazon Prime does a great job here as well, charging 14 centimes per piece of content.

For power users: 4K

Almost all streaming platforms now offer 4K quality streaming, but usually for an additional fee. 4K subscriptions from Disney, Sky and Netflix each cost 30% to 40% more than standard subscriptions, making them more than twice as expensive as Amazon Prime at that quality level. Streaming services from American online mail-order companies such as Apple already offer 4K as standard, so subscription fees are among the cheapest in the category.
