Some may see Helldivers 2 as a horrific battle across the cosmos, but the game’s satirical warfare also hides numerous references to other franchises. In a recent discovery, it turns out the multiplayer game hides a deep-cut reference to the long-finished animated series Gravity Falls. While a fun reference in itself, fans are convinced its also being used to tease the game’s upcoming Illuminate faction.

Helldivers 2 Gravity Falls reference

As the brilliant Battle for Claorell came to a close, one fan discovered a reference to the Disney-published animation after decimating Automaton forces. One deceased bot laying on the ground was seen holding a book showing a palm with four fingers, whereas Automaton forces only have three.

As it turns out, this is a direct reference to Gravity Falls’ Journal 3, a book discovered in the pilot episode of the beloved animation. The original version of the journal has a golden palm print with seven fingers, one more than the typical human’s five finger hands.

In the TV show, the book collates information on the various supernatural and paranormal creatures and events of the titular Gravity Falls location. With this in mind, the Automaton’s version of the book could hide multiple secrets. What paranormal threats have these robots seen? Maybe the long-anticipated alien Illuminate?

Teasing The Illuminate?

As many fans have pointed out, the contents of the book do not matter to any of Super Earth’s defenders of democracy. After all, any Helldiver showing even a modicum of interest in the cultures of Alien forces are committing treason, and treason is punishable by death.

Nevertheless, fans have noticed that the journal could also be an internal reference to some of the weird happenings at Claorell. Mysterious blue beams and other strange happenings could be teasing the upcoming Illuminate coming alongside the construction of the DSS space station.
