Which cars will remain reliable as they age, and which ones pose risks? The TÜV report has the answer. It is based on the results of 10.2 million routine inspections by the testing agency and shows which models perform well and which have flaws.
What stands out?
Electric vehicles are also launched for the first time
More than 20% of cars are found to have major defects during general inspection (HU). About 150,000 people were classified as “unsafe to traffic” and had to go to a pit immediately. About 15,000 factories were so unsafe that they were immediately shut down.
The TÜV report also tested electric vehicles for the first time, with mixed results. The Volkswagen e-Golf's performance is convincing: its defect rate of 3.4% ranks ninth among vehicles two to three years old. Tesla's Model 3 is at the other end of the spectrum. It ranked last with a defect rate of 14.2%.
In general, however, the following applies: “Electric vehicles are not technically safer or less safe than internal combustion engine vehicles,” the report said.

The Honda Jazz tops the TÜV rankings: with a defect rate of only 2.4%, it leads among vehicles two to three years old. Followed by Volkswagen Golf Sportsvan (2.5%) and Audi Q2 (2.6%).
The Porsche 911 Carrera has long been a favorite, dominating the four- to five-year-old and six-to-seven-year-old car categories.
The following models perform particularly well in various market segments:
- Mini: Kia Picanto (3.8%)
- Small car: Honda Jazz (3.4%)
- Compact: Volkswagen e-Golf (3.4%)
- SUV: Audi Q2 (2.6%)
- Van: Volkswagen Golf Sportsvan (2.5%)

Cars at the bottom of TÜV’s rankings have alarmingly high defect rates. Among cars that are two to three years old, Tesla Model 3 accounts for 14.2%, ranking at the bottom. Leader: Ford Mondeo, 13.2%. The Skoda Scala (11.8%) and Skoda Superb (11.3%) also performed poorly.

“Even high mileage cannot hide the poor performance of the Model 3. In addition to defects in brakes and axles, Teslas also have a particularly high number of light defects. This indicates service and maintenance deficiencies.”

And the defect rate increases significantly with age. Among vehicles 10 to 11 years old, the Dacia Logan achieved an astonishing 39.6%, followed by the Dacia Duster (34.1%) and the Renault Twingo (33.0%). The Renault Megane (32.7%) and Citroën C3 (31.9%) also performed poorly.
