Donald Trump is moving back to the White House. In addition to the electoral votes, Republican candidates will also receive the popular vote. But which points made a decisive contribution to Trump’s victory?

Five aspects that stand out during the selection process.

rural voters

Basically, Democrats dominate in urban areas and Republicans dominate in rural areas. This doctrine was proven true again this year.

But only now do we understand just how powerful a force rural voters are. Trump gained further support among this group of voters compared with 2020, also securing decisions in swing states such as Michigan and Pennsylvania.

And: While Trump was able to win the base, Harris did worse in urban areas than Joe Biden did in 2020. This also contributed to Trump's victory in swing states.

Latino men

Trump’s campaign targeted young people — and it paid off. One demographic group in particular stands out: Latino men.

In CNN's exit polls, it's clear how Latino male voters have shifted significantly to the red. Compared to 2016 and 2020, this is the first time he has been able to convince more voters than Democrats.

Swing state that no longer exists

Gone are the days of Florida as a swing state. Before Trump, Florida was often the source of controversy (e.g. Obama won the state in 2008 and 2012), but since 2016, the picture has become clear.

And by 2024, the results will be clear. More than 55% of voters in Florida voted for Trump, while Harris received about 43% support.

Southern states unexpectedly swung toward Republicans early on election night, and Democrats quickly buried their hopes of surprise. Latino voters are also one reason Trump is doing well.

Ohio’s days as a swing state are also gone. The Midwestern state fell to Trump in 2016, 2020 and 2024. The state fell to Democrats in 2008 and 2012.

Young men under 30 years old

As already mentioned, the focus of the Trump campaign was on young people – and as already mentioned, it has paid off. Particularly exciting here are the under-30s in swing states.

In Pennsylvania, for example, Trump made gains among this group. While Biden was able to perform well on this front in 2020 (8 points ahead of Trump), 2024 plays out a completely different story: Trump beats Harris by 18 points.

Black person

Harris won a majority among black voters, but her performance in 2020 was not as good as Joe Biden's.

The shift from Democrats to Republicans has been particularly pronounced among blacks.

In the swing state of North Carolina, for example, 20% of black people voted for Trump, up from 10% in 2020.
