The crime took place on Rua Castro Alves in the Mbare neighborhood of Santos on the morning of October 1. According to the civil police, the group of criminals entered the building with the help of a doorman.
They targeted the Santos FC goalkeeper who, as security camera images show, left the building a minute before the crime spree. After recovering, Joao Paulo went to the training center for medical treatment.
“I wasn't at home then, I was undergoing CT treatment (for an ankle injury), only Jo (wife, Julian Costa) was here, but thank God nothing happened, okay? Everyone is fine here, all you can do is stay calm,” João Paulo said in a video posted on Instagram with his wife.
Since the athlete was no longer in the building, two men, a maid and a lawyer were taken hostage in addition to two employees who worked in the occupied building. Pictures released by TV Globo show what the police operation looked like.
Negotiations for fugitive and suspected doorman, 'hunt'
Military police were called. Upon arrival, the team shot and killed one of the suspects, a 19-year-old, who had to be taken to Santa Casa de Santos. Two more attackers surrendered hours later after freeing their victims. A fourth suspect was later found trying to hide.
Negotiations between the criminals and the military police teams for the surrender and release of the victims lasted for about four hours. One of the criminals, who fled the apartment used by the group as a hideout, was chased by police into the condominium.
After leaving the property through the window towards the apartment below, the culprit was caught by the police hiding on the balcony.
During the operation, the group stole the victims' belongings, including cellphones, accessories, jewelry and watches worth about R$41,000. The items were returned to the owners.
Police arrested a doorman at the condominium allegedly involved in the crime, according to Lilian Toretto, the deputy in charge of the case from Santos' 3rd Police District.
He said he got in touch with the group after some criminals questioned him about the residents of the building where he worked, which is in a prestigious area. The doorman told the police that he and his family had been threatened with death if they did not cooperate with the robbery.
On the day of the crime, the doorman alerted the residents of the arrival of a maid, which allowed the perpetrators access by car through the garage. The doorkeeper must answer as an accomplice to the crime.
The police are investigating cases of criminal association, reception, fraud in practice, unlawful possession or carrying of a firearm for a prohibited use, bodily injury, attempted murder, attempted burglary of house and residence, and possession of an object.
