Mourners got off the trains bound for Uster from all directions and walked towards the church. Most people are wearing dark-colored clothes. But some people opt for brighter, friendlier color options. One could assume that Muriel Fuller and her cheerful personality would really enjoy this.

On September 27 this year, tragic circumstances thrust the 18-year-old into the spotlight. Fuller died that day from a traumatic brain injury. The day before, the Zurich woman suffered a serious fall during the junior women's race of the World Cycling Championships in the forest above Kusnacht.

More than a year after Gino Mäder's fatal accident at the Tour de Suisse, Furrel's death has reignited debate about the safety and dangers of the sport. The specific circumstances of the accident and criminal liability remain to be investigated. Most importantly, the tragedy inspired sympathy and remembrance at home and in neighboring countries far beyond the cycling community.

The service had to be moved to nearby Uster

That's what this Friday is all about, at a funeral not far from the Egg neighborhood where the Fullers lived: an expression of sympathy. And saying goodbye to someone who left your life too soon.

Interest is so great that the ceremony will not be held in Ege but will have to be moved to nearby Uster. In addition to family members, closest friends, classmates and representatives of Swiss cycling were present. Zurich government member Mario Fehr, who was delivering a speech, and Sandra Mäder, mother of the late Gino Mäder, were also present. In addition, some Egham people had gathered in the church and were sitting on the balcony. Her eyes were fixed on the altar, which was surrounded by flowers and pictures of the deceased. Mountain biking and racing are reminiscent of Furrer's work.

More information about the tragic accident:

Mother Christine, father Reto and siblings Michelle and Eric gave their opinions in the form of letters read by different speakers. The painting depicts a man devoted to his activities with joy and humility. Wherever cycling takes us, we will have memories of traveling together through Europe, Andorra, Verona, South Tyrol, full of fun and happiness. It should not be forgotten that Muriel Fuller also had a critical spirit. She is someone who confronts the darker sides of the sport, such as bullying and body worship.

What could Freire achieve? There is room for these ideas too

Her deep faith, the strength she draws from God, and the Christian quotes that adorn her race car are also discussed a lot. She also expressed incomprehension that in professional sports she was prohibited from commenting on religion in addition to political issues.

What else could Freire have accomplished? Will she become a pastor, an Olympian or a sports scientist? Such questions are also given space, although no answers can be given. All that's left is to realize that even a life like Freire's, with its many unfulfilled dreams, is achievable. This is one of the most forgiving thoughts that can come from mourning this painful loss. (aargauerzeitung.ch)
