Ubisoft has just quietly confirmed that The Division 3 is in active development, in a message detailing the future of the brand.
Julian Gerighty has been appointed the new executive producer for the series, and his appointment announcement includes the statement “Julian Gerighty will oversee all The Division games and products, including Tom Clancy’s The Division 3 led by Massive Entertainment who is actively building a team for the game.” As part of Gerighty’s new role, he’ll be overseeing production of the new game, and as per Ubisoft he duties will also include “drive the many interdependent production elements of The Division brand in a unified direction. This includes development oversight, operations, and creative vision together with the development teams around the world who are currently developing the mobile game Tom Clancy’s The Division Resurgence, Tom Clancy’s The Division Heartland, and Tom Clancy’s The Division 2.”
It’s something of a surprise – as there’s two The Division games currently already in the works, and the wording of the statement makes it clear that The Division 3 is not either of these games. The Division Resurgence is a mobile focused entry and was announced last year, but still doesn’t have a release date, although we did see gameplay back in April of this year during the annual The Division Day celebrations. The Division Heartland, meanwhile, is a free-to-play spin off on its way to PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One and PC but similarly, doesn’t have a release date just yet and is currently said to be “coming soon” on its official website.
Gerighty has worked on both of the previous mainline The Division titles, including as Associate Creative Director on the first game before being promoted to Creative Director on The Division 2. Interestingly, Gerighty had been working on the upcoming Ubisoft Star Wars game Star Wars Outlaws prior to his appointment, and will still remain on that project through launch “to ensure the game meets the intended creative vision and provide a great experience for players.”
There’s no word on platforms or a release window for The Division 3 yet, but we’ll be sure to update you when we hear more. In the meantime, check out our The Division 2 review here.
