The Day Before has been removed from Steam following its studio’s closure, meaning the survival MMO-turned-extraction-shooter can no longer be bought (and subsequently refunded). This development comes after the game’s disgruntled community lodged a mountain of complaints accusing Fntastic of scamming players by providing a completely different extraction shooter experience as opposed to the survival MMO gameplay promised upon its initial announcement in 2021.
For those following the drama surrounding The Day Before closely, this shouldn’t come as a surprise, as the misleading project from Fntastic was immediately ripped to shreds on opening day, with thousands of people asking for refunds and leaving scathing reviews on the game’s Steam page. This eventually led to the studio completely shutting down, as outrage surrounding the short-lived looter shooter increased to absurd new heights after players discovered that Fntastic’s website had been rubbed clean and the studio’s CEO had gone completely dark.
Despite player requests for the game to be removed from Steam finally being fulfilled, some still aren’t entirely satisfied with the outcome, as players are now calling on Valve to issue refunds to those who purchased the game. However, one Redditor pointed out that Steam pays developers monthly, so “whatever cash [that] got sent out is still in [Valve’s] own pockets instead of Fntastic’s.” The same user also pointed out that The Day Before has a 46% refund rate, so Valve is “already halfway there.”
It’s currently unclear whether Steam will be issuing full refunds to players who purchased the game, as Valve has yet to officially comment on the issues and complaints surrounding The Day Before. Nevertheless, this is undoubtedly a step in the right direction towards righting the wrongs that Fntastic put its players through. Now, only time will tell if the embattled developer can fulfill their original promise of providing a zombie-filled cooperative survival MMO experience.
