On Wednesday, The Daily Show‘s Ronny Chieng took a chunk out of Donald Trump after his unhinged and false rant about Kamala Harris’ racial identity, and last night, there was somehow more to unpack.
Why? The former president inexplicably dragged Mindy Kaling into this, posting on his own Truth Social a 2019 video showing Kaling and Harris cooking masala dosa together (Trump has also posted pictures of Harris’ family on Truth Social in this tirade). In the video, the pair discuss their South Indian heritage — Harris is of Indian and Jamaican descent.
Onstage at the panel with the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ), Trump had asked a blatantly false questions of Harris, saying “She was always of Indian heritage, and she was only promoting Indian heritage. I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago, when she happened to turn Black, and now she wants to be known as Black. So I don’t know, is she Indian or is she Black?”
At this point if you need to scream into something, I’ll wait.
On the Daily Show, Chieng examined Trump’s actions, especially his decision to post the video of Kaling and Harris, and made a good point that this video is four years old.
“So, Trump posted this video but I’m like how did he even find this?” asked Chieng. “Was he doing deep, awful research on Mindy Kaling’s Instagram page? Like how far down the Mindy rabbit hole did he go?”
