The appointment of German Thomas Tuchel as the coach of the England national team was met with criticism from professional footballers

Former players and managers have criticized the FA's decision to appoint Tomasz Tuchel as the next England manager.

The German has agreed to become the new manager of the Three Lions and is expected to arrive this week to sign a contract worth £5m a year.

The former Chelsea boss will be only the third non-English manager of the England men's team and some in the team believe the top job should not be given to a foreign coach.

Manager Harry Redknapp, himself a candidate for the job, was disappointed with the FA's decision to look abroad for another appointment.

The former football boss told Sky Sports: “I wanted an Englishman to manage England. I'm a great patriot and I think we should have an English manager.

“But there was very little room for choice because English people don't get managerial jobs in the Premier League very often now. All clubs are owned by foreign owners and bring in a foreign manager.

The German will start in January on an 18-month deal, meaning the 2026 World Cup in North America could be his only tournament in charge.

Tuchel's trophy haul certainly appeals to the FA, but he also knows English football well. He won the Champions League as Chelsea boss in 2021 and worked with England captain Harry Kane at Bayern Munich last season.

Redknapp, however, does not believe the 51-year-old's record justifies his call-up to international football.

He added: “He lost his job at several clubs quite quickly. It's not like he was a huge success. He appeared and disappeared in several clubs. He wasn't like Jurgen Klopp, who was often at the club. many years.

People keep saying, “you must be a great coach” and “this man is a great coach.” There are no great coaches. You have to show a bit of common sense, choose the best players, put them in the right position, get the best out of them, build an atmosphere and make them feel great. That's what it's all about.

Stuart Pearce believes there will be a lot to be expected from Tuchel, who succeeds Gareth Southgate at the helm.

He said: “When Gareth left in the summer, people said: 'We have to take the next step'.

“Where is the next step from reaching the finals and winning second place?” The next step is to earn trophies. Those will be the expectations and I think he's going to have a really tough tournament in a year and a half where he'll be trying to win the World Cup in (the United States), Mexico and Canada. It's a difficult prospect.

Former England defender Danny Mills said Tuchel's appointment comes with “a few surprises”: “He's an exceptional coach. There are a few surprises. I don't understand why he starts in January.

Who will choose the squad in November? Will Tuchel attend the matches? Will he have any input? And the FA must answer, why not an Englishman? Why did they go the other way again? But I will do it. Tuchel is a fantastic coach and he will do very well.

However, some in the game were more positive about the nominations. Former Liverpool, Blackburn and Aston Villa defender Stephen Warnock said Tuchel has a “clear identity” in his playing style.

Warnock said: “I like this match. I think it has a clear identity. He doesn't have to sign contracts with players, so focusing on the best could suit him.

“I understand the argument about where to leave the English coaches, but I think he will bring in the English coaches.”

Former England defender Matthew Upson said Tuchel “met most of the criteria” as a football manager.

He said: “I think it's a good match. It ticks most of the boxes; trophies, clubs he managed, his statute. He has dealt with difficult situations in the media, so he has the profile to be England manager.

“Is it preferred that they are English?” Yes. But at the end of the day, we want to put the best person in place who we think will win a major tournament.”

The FA has polled candidates including Pep Guardiola and Eddie Howe for the job Lee Carsley is currently doing on an interim basis after Gareth Southgate stepped down following a heartbreaking defeat to Spain in the 2024 Euro Final.

However, talks between Tuchel and the FA quickly gained momentum, with the authorities aware of the interest in the 51-year-old from Manchester United, who are considering the future of boss Eryk ten Hag.

United's defeat to Brentford on Saturday could mean Ten Hag's sacking, and Tuchel will certainly be keen to replace him, having already met Sir Jim Ratcliffe in the summer to discuss taking over as manager at Old Trafford.

Tuchel's trophy haul certainly appeals to the FA, but he also knows English football well. He won the Champions League as Chelsea manager in 2021 and worked with England captain Harry Kane at Bayern Munich last season.

It is understood that Tuchel is effectively on gardening leave after leaving Bayern last summer, which may have financial implications for the FA but is not serious enough to derail the deal.

Tuchel, who has been a regular visitor to London since leaving Chelsea in 2022, is keen to get back to work and the job in England has proved too attractive to turn down.

English coach Anthony Barry, who worked with Tuchel at Chelsea and Bayern before taking up his current role in Portugal, is likely to reunite with Tuchel at St George's Park.

Carsley, whose prospects of taking up the job permanently were damaged when his ultra-attacking England squad were thrashed by Greece at Wembley last week, will remain in charge of next month's Nations League return against the Greeks and the closing group against Ireland.

On Saturday, Mail Sport reported that the FA had serious reservations about whether Carsley even wanted to replace Gareth Southgate on a full-time basis.

Those doubts have intensified in recent days after a series of public comments from the 50-year-old that appeared to distance him from the vacancy.

Carsley had support within the FA, but a sense that he was not fully convinced to take the reins led the FA to exclude the Under-21 manager from the bid and instead go to Tuchel.

Manchester City boss Guardiola was seen as a dream candidate by the governing body, but the FA has received no encouragement from him since an interview in July.

Tuchel's appointment means England will be the only leading footballing nation to have foreign managers in both its men's and women's teams.

The head of Lioness is Sarina Wiegman from the Netherlands. The FA must hope Tuchel can have a similar impact to Wiegman, who led England to Euro 2022 glory.

The FA declined to comment.

Tuchel has an impressive CV, winning league titles with Paris Saint-Germain and Bayern Munich, as well as the Champions League, Super Cup and Club World Cup with Chelsea.

However, this will no doubt be viewed as a controversial move by the FA due to England's rivalry with their native Germany.

England captain Harry Kane played under Tuchel at Bayern Munich last season and spoke earlier today of his former boss's links to the job.

“I obviously know Thomas well from last year. Fantastic coach, fantastic person, so I'm sure the FA guys will contact me when they know more about it,” he said.

Tuchel's first match on the bench will probably take place in March and it will be a qualifying match for the 2026 World Cup.

According to reports, the 51-year-old was recently told that he would be Manchester United's No. 1 target if the club decided to sack Ten Hag.

United courted the German in the summer but opted to stick with Ten Hag despite a disastrous start to the season.
