As a video game journalist, I see a lot of press releases pass me by with titles that get me excited to play, but none more so recently than Sword of Convallaria. Happily for me then, XD Entertainment has finally released this future masterpiece, and it is free to play.
Sword of Convallaria is a tactical game inspired by classic TRPGs, featuring a story full of political intrigue across the nation of Iria. It is also set across 120 hours, and I personally am a massive fan of long-winded games. Sounds sarcastic, but true.
There are two ways to play here. Spiral of Destinies is a massive open-ended single-player storyline with a player-driven narrative and a huge ten endings to unlock. You will traverse different paths as you engage with the world’s factions and choose who you want to help or hinder. One playthrough might see you siding with the Papal States, and the next, you are in the Union of Knight States.
The second option is an online mode where you will put together a guild and participate in weekly quests. Recruit and train your own gang of mercenaries, become heroes of legends, and maybe save the world in the process. This also makes me want to forgo all single-player factions and create my own, see how that goes.
If you find yourself in awe of the soundtrack, you won’t be the only one. That is because it comes from the mind of Hitoshi Sakimoto, who has titles from the Final Fantasy series and Valkyria Chronicles under his belt. Add to this the voice talents of icons like Kazuhiko Inoue (Final Fantasy XV), Aoi Yuki (Xenoblade Chronicles, and Takuya Eguchi (Spy x Family), this may be one of the best-sounding things on mobile. And I’m including Spotify in that.
Sword of Convallaria is available to download free now from the App Store and Google Play.
