Star Wars 1313 is a project that never ended up coming to life, but the similarities between what is known of 1313 and Star Wars Outlaws are hard to ignore. A recent interview with Narrative Director Navid Khavari ignited speculation that it could be the spiritual rebirth of the long-mourned 1313. While details of 1313 may be scarce, the description of Outlaws sounds like what 1313 was going to be.
In the interview with Kotaku, Khavari spoke of a Star Wars experience that leans heavily into open-world exploration, gritty underworld dealings, and the thrill of carving your own path through the galaxy’s criminal underbelly. Outlaws throws off the shackles of linear storytelling, embracing the vast potential of an open-world Star Wars game. It did sound like 1313 was going to be a linear game, but Outlaws may take the concept and open it up.
The interview heavily emphasized the seedy underbelly that will serve as your playground in Star Wars Outlaws. There were rumors that players would work in the neon-drenched depths of Coruscant’s criminal district in 1313. Outlaws seems to be picking up that torch and sprinting with it.
Instead of sticking to one story or planet, players may be able to traverse the sprawling cityscape of Coruscant’s underbelly, navigate the treacherous jungle moon of Endor, or hunt for bounties across the desolate plains of Tatooine. The developer hinted at diverse environments teeming with life, each offering unique gameplay opportunities and emergent storytelling possibilities.
This freedom – as well as the similarities with 1313 – extends to your character. Instead of being just another Jedi or Sith, you are an outlaw on your own. Outlaws are normally the people who smuggle and haul spice across the Outer Rim, bounty hunters tracking scum across the galaxy by any means, and criminals navigating the treacherous labyrinth of Coruscant’s criminal underworld.
But your adventures won’t be confined to the grimy streets. The developer mentioned the possibility of owning and customizing your own ship, your personal haven amidst the galactic storm. Imagine this trusty vessel as your mobile base of operations, a launching pad for your exploits, and a refuge from the relentless pursuit of bounty hunters and vengeful rivals.
Ubisoft didn’t outright say that Outlaws is somewhat inspired by the rumors of 1313, but it sure sounds like they started from there and made it far better.
